FBR Baggage Rule Reversed

Earlier it was proposed that those coming to Pakistan from foreign countries should be aware that only one mobile phone can be brought, and goods worth only $1200 will be allowed in the baggage. It was decided to impose a complete ban on bringing goods from foreign countries for commercial use worth more than $1200. One mobile phone would be allowed for use from foreign countries. FBR had issued a notification earlier regarding the amendment in the 2006 baggage scheme. According to FBR, a draft regarding further amendment in the FBR Baggage Rules 2006 had been issued. Recommendations regarding amendments to the rules could be modified within seven days. According to FBR, after the stipulated time, seasonal goods will not be accepted. According to the notification issued by FBR, under the amendment in the baggage scheme, goods worth more than $1200 will be allowed for commercial trade. According to FBR, under the amendment, all mobile phones would have been confiscated except one mobile phone.

The public expressed significant dissatisfaction with a recent amendment in the law, particularly because it was perceived as unfair and detrimental to certain groups. Many citizens took to social media platforms to voice their concerns, organizing campaigns, sharing petitions, and using hashtags to amplify their discontent. The backlash quickly gained momentum, as online discussions turned into widespread protests. Critics argued that the amendment infringed on basic rights or disproportionately affected vulnerable communities. The rapid spread of these sentiments online led to increased pressure on lawmakers, with many public figures and organizations joining the call for a reversal. As the online protests grew louder, government officials began to take notice, and the law was eventually repealed. This event highlighted the power of digital platforms in shaping public opinion and influencing political decisions, demonstrating that widespread online mobilization can have a tangible impact on legal and policy changes.

Chairman FBR has instructed to reverse the amendment in Customs Baggage Rules-2006. Chairman FBR has also stopped the implementation of the proposal to ban bringing more than one mobile phone in the baggage to Pakistan. According to FBR officials, permission to bring two mobile phones remains under the existing Rules-2006. Chairman FBR has also instructed to withdraw the proposal to ban commercial goods worth more than $1200 in the luggage and instructed to withdraw the amendment in Rules-2006 and resubmit it after amending it.
